What happens after the first conversation
Follow-up is part of the care conversation
In a few words
Before agreeing to a plan, ask who will review it with you and how to reach that person.
Ask how to reach the person treating you
The medical boards’ prescribing advice says patients need a way to ask further questions. This advice was checked in September 2026.
This is board guidance; the enforceable rule is set by the state.
Ask where a message goes, who reads it and how a reply arrives. Put the answer in the same notes as the treatment discussion.
Who reviews test results with me?
How will we decide whether the plan is meeting its goal?
Who can arrange an examination in person?
What does the fee include after the initial visit?
Make room for a different plan
Ask what would lead to another review, a referral or a conversation about stopping. If the answer is “we do not know yet”, ask what comes next: more time, a test, or another person’s opinion?
The medical boards advise using the same care checks online as in person, rather than skipping them because the visit is remote.
